Kato Locomotive - Southern Pacific GE C44-9W The picture above is of my first venture into model railroad scenery. I built this about 10 years ago. It's a Woodland Scenics Scenery Kit, #S927 to be exact.
I remember the day it came in the mail. I was very eager to get started, but was a little apprehensive and concerned that i wouldn't be able to get the railroad terrain just right. What can I say? I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to this kind of thing. Anyway, as it turned out, I had nothing to worry about after all. The kit provided me with everything I needed to get my first taste of scenery making. The finished model turned out great and I was very proud of my accomplishment. This kit is an excellent starting point for beginners. It contains a 10 x 18 HO scale diorama base and all the scenery materials too. Since I personally do N scale, I used an N gauge track and engine instead of HO. The switch worked out fine, and actually looked better with an N scale locomotive sitting on it. It made the scenery look larger and more realistic. I added the Kato locomotive and the background in the picture above. Just so you'll know, the background is just a couple of box covers from two Walthers Cornerstone models. Pretty clever huh? :-) It worked quite well for picture taking purposes, but I had to do a little "photoshop" editing on it. If you're a newbie and are worried that you can't do this, think again. You can do it! It's easier than you might think. I had a LOT of fun building this model train diorama. It really got my creative juices flowing. And from that point I felt confident enough in my new found abilities to build a basic 4 x 8 train table. So, check out the scenery kits and layout kits from Woodland Scenics.
